I hope you’re all having a wonderful Christmas Day! I don’t want to keep you long on this day when you should be giving your family and loved ones your undivided attention… if you want, save this post (bookmark, or if you’re on Bloglovin, you have the option to save it too!) and browse it later! I wanted to share a few outfit options today with you for any upcoming New Year’s Eve Party. Scroll down to see where I got this cute little number from!

Holiday Colors

I love to wear white, red, gold, and other variations of these colors during the holiday time and into the New Year. Maybe it’s my Chinese heritage or maybe they just fully embody the holiday spirit for me… I think white and red is the perfect color combination for a New Year’s Eve party!

My Fail-safe Outfit Choice for All Occasion

One of these days, I’m going to run out of things to say about Eliza J dresses because there is always a perfect Eliza J dress for any occasion.  I wore one for my husband’s company holiday party earlier this month,  I wore it during our wedding rehearsal dinner back in March, and another one for another company holiday party 2 years ago. Need I say more?

Whatever you wear, make sure to put away your phone when you’re ringing the New Year in, have great conversations, really TALK to your loved ones and not just having superficial conversations. To me, that’s what the holiday season is really about. See you in 2018!!

December is everyone’s favorite month for many reasons. For me, the festivities and getting together with friends and family, amongst all, is definitely the biggest reason! Side note: I am hosting our first ever Friendsmas party in San Diego a week before Christmas this year. I will be sharing some decor, invite, and recipe prep details next week! But back on the original topic – for many of us working in the corporate 9-5 environment, it also means there might be a company holiday party coming up soon.

Earlier this week we discussed style faux-pas to avoid when it comes to what to wear to a company holiday party. Today, I have yet another classic piece to share with you that’s perfect to wear to a company holiday party by London Times. But on top of just outfits, I also rounded up some useful tips to make you enjoy the holiday party with coworkers more.

Jumpers make for great #girlboss outfits

Less feminine and conservative than dresses, jumpsuits by nature convey a bit more power and confidence. It’s modern, unconventional, and just a little different. I always feel like a big girl when I wear one. So if you’re in management, and wearing a skirt isn’t your thing, a jumpsuit might be just the outfit for you!

Now that we have your outfit selection squared away, let’s talk about mentally preparing you for the company holiday party. We all know that the company holiday party basically a networking event. So, it means on top of socializing, you should probably watch how much you’re drinking and avoid topics like politics, money, and overly personal topics. But what CAN you talk about?

Be curious about the other person, and limit talking about yourself

A simple tip in having any good conversation is to ask about the person’s life whom you’re talking to. Get the other person to talk about himself /herself. Be curious about the person you’re speaking to if you’re starting a conversation. Reciprocate with your own stories but keep that to a minimal. The rule of thumb to keep talking about yourself under 20 seconds (according to the 20-second rule) and listen more than you talk.

Keep your cell phone out of sight

We all know the signal that you send when you decide to bury your face in your phone and not look up at people – “don’t talk to me” is what it is. But did you know that even having the phone near you even when it’s turned off, it’s still distracting enough to impair people’s decision making and problem-solving skills? Don’t succumb to the temptation of looking up the latest tweet or what your favorite Instagram star is doing. Stay in the present and enjoy – there’s a reason why it’s the “present”!

Prep your talking points

Always have topics ready in your back pockets. For this time of the year, you can ask “Are you done with all the Christmas shopping?” or “Planning any fun trips anytime soon?” One question that worked really well for me in the last few years is to ask for marriage advice since I just got married this year. This one really gets people talking. Of course, be careful who you ask. Make sure you know a little bit about their marital status. You don’t want to spring this question on a recent divorcee. Here are 48 other topics for you to consider in case you want to expand your list.

Guys, It’s December!! Where did the last 11 months go in 2017!? With Thanksgiving just in our rear-view window, Christmas is hovering around the corner. Which means you’ve been getting invitations for Christmas parties from friends and families! But not all holiday parties are created equal, and especially not the Company/Employer-hosted kind. The age-old “what to wear” question takes on an entirely different meaning and so much more is at stake if you were to wear the wrong thing. Still thinking about what to wear to your company holiday party this coming weekend or the next? I got you covered!

Eliza J is My Go-To Brand for All Special Occasion Dresses

Let me just preface this by saying this is not sponsored in any way shape or form! If you’ve been following me for a while you know how many times I’ve blogged about their dresses. It’s A Cubicle Chic tradition! I blogged about it in 2015, 2016, and this Christmas is no exception!I have a few outfit ideas to share with you this week.  In particular, this Eliza J  floral lace dress has these cute flare sleeves and is INCREDIBLY FLATTERING. If you are looking for a dress that will cover a food baby bump, this is it!!

You can find this exact Eliza J fit and flare dress from a variety of sources – compare & contrast before you buy. Some of them are actually discounted right now!! Eliza Eliza J dresses are almost always form-fitting enough and still flattering no matter your figure. If you like the style above but aren’t into this color or the sleeves, here are a bunch other choices that are pretty similar, ALSO made by Eliza J!

So now that we got the outfit selection out of the way, let’s talk other fashion-related etiquette for the event. I’m calling these faux-pas because I’ve seen them happened in the handful of company hosted holiday party myself. Some are embarrassing while others are downright tragic.

Avoid Cotton Dresses unless You’re a Boho Goddess

There may be a very flattering and company party appropriate cotton dress out there, I just personally have never seen one. The problem with cotton dresses is that they wrinkle easily, don’t normally flatter you (at least not the party dresses), and usually make you look very casual. Casual is the codeword for sloppy at a company holiday party. So avoid it at all costs.

Got a Big Butt and Want to Flaunt it? Don’t.

This is simply not the right occasion. I know you work out. I know you’re very proud of it. Heck, I wish I had your butt. But no. If you want to be respected for your professional competency, don’t let the impression of your nice butt tamper with people’s image of you. They say men are visual animals… I say people are visual animals. Especially when it comes to a woman’s figure. I think the line needs to be drawn at what do you want people to remember you of.

This is potentially a controversial stance to take on this topic. If you disagree with me, what are your thoughts?

Pick the right color of dress for YOU

This is a tough one. Everyone’s complexion is different, so there is not a one-color-fits-all solution here. There are general principles out there like warm skin tone is complimented by warm colors and cool skin tone is complimented by cool colors. Also, there are simply psychological associations that we unconsciously form when seeing different colors. Honestly, if I was ever to give ONE fashion advice to everyone who wants to know out there, it’s find the right color that compliments you. For me, I stick with feminine colors (white, gray, blush/light pink) and for the right occasion, I will rock bold colors like royal blue, dark green, or bright red. This is a general rule of thumb but I think everyone should have colors they always stick with!

That’s a wrap! I have another outfit coming your way later this week so stay tuned. In the mean time, if you want to find inspiration on what to wear to a company holiday party, here are all the other posts I’ve done over the years:

Online Style Curation Companies Save Us Time!

As a professional woman working full time, between keeping some sort of fitness routine and work-life balance, sometimes there simply isn’t time to go to the mall and shop. You know how sometimes we wished we had personal stylists that picked out things for us that they know 100% would fit and make us feel free? Well, online style curation companies do that!

I’ve heard two polar reactions toward this trend:

1.     What? I have to pay someone to go shopping for me? That takes all the fun out! I LOVE shopping! Why would I ever buy stuff and not be able to “shop”?

2.      What? I can have someone who knows what they’re doing to pick stuff out and mail them to me? I’m all ears!

This may be a no-brainer for some of you shopaholics out there (lol), others may need more reasoning and justification before you jumped on this bandwagon. I am actually kind of pro-online style curation at this point. I’ve tried a few different companies, most of them have worked out quite nicely. I would say about 20% of all my shopping nowadays are done through an online style curation company.

Here 5 reasons why I like to use online style curation services:

1.     Convenience

This is an obvious one – you won’t need to browse through online catalogs of numerous products and figure out sizing, color, fit, all on your own. You usually would have to share a little bit about what type of clothing or accessories you’re looking for through some kind of survey/questionnaire. Then, the stylist will put together a list of items for you. A box arrives at your door with everything that’s been curated for you!

2.     Break out of your style rut

This was one of the main driving forces for me when I started using online style curation services, specially DailyLook Elite. A few years ago, I started noticing that I was purchasing the same kind of items in different colors and different brands, and I always gravitate toward the same styles everywhere I shopped. I wanted to try out different styles but I also wanted to make sure am trying the RIGHT styles for me. My first box with Dailylook came with pieces in colors I NEVER reach for (see mustard orange blazer to the right) but turned out to be the best new color/style I needed to try!

3.     Learn about new brands

I like sticking to the same brands when it comes to shopping for clothes because you know you can expect the same fit and quality. Keeping up with new brands, especially a lot of the indie/novel brands that are popping up every day, is a daunting task. Through EUJEANCO, I learned about a new brand that made amazing jeans called Articles of Society. Through DailyLook, I learned about Just Black for equally amazing jeans. Both are in the $30-$60 price point. I know just the brands I’d be looking for next time I need to pick out jeans!

Four pairs of jeans from EUJEANCO that fit perfectly. The 5th pair (that I ended up keeping) is the muted pink pair I’m wearing below!

4.     Avoid the chaotic mall situation

If you live in Southern California or any major metropolitan city, you probably run into the situation that I do. It takes forever to find parking lot, super long lines to get cash register, long times at Starbucks… I hate lines. Therefore, I prefer shopping online!

5.     Reduce shipping waste

Did you know nearly 30% of all online purchases get returned to retailers? If I’m completely honest, it feels like I return more than 30% of things I buy online. With a style curation company, If the they designed the style questionnaire well and the stylist really takes time to know you and your style, what they pick for you should be PERFECT. It was the case with EUJEANCO for me – they sent me 5 pairs of jeans that all fit like a glove. Compared to returning 30% of what I buy back to the retailers, I want to have my purchases actually fit so I can keep them! (Here’s a promo code to save $15 from the $25 styling fee, which if you end up keeping the jeans, it will be applied toward the purchase of it!)

In addition, I’ve also tried Trunk Club & mm. LaFleur. While they definitely have quality pieces, in my personal experience their curation process fall short compared to DilayLook and EuJeanco’s. What’s your experience like with some of these online style curation services??

Disclaimer: I periodically receive styled boxes from Dailylook and get to keep a portion of the items. I received 1 styled box from EUJEANCO in exchange of my opinion and was gifted one out od the 5 pairs that I received.

Spring is upon us!

But before we delve fully into florals and pastel colors only, let’s talk about a fail-safe outfit template that I’ve stumbled upon recently: comfy trousers with a sporty flare topped with a nude trench vest that’s warm and versatile for the Spring weather.

For all of you ladies out there that rock pencil skirts in the office, you have my respect. I have tried and tried, I just couldn’t tolerate how uncomfortable pencil skirts are. So for me comfy trousers are my go-to type of pants. This Tobi piece nailed it with how comfortable they are, and the stripe on the side makes it look just that much more styled and slightly more casual too. That’s why I have to couple it with something that has little more polished edge to it. Hence the trench coat…

It’s a short one today. This is about it!

As I continue my job search a.k.a funemployment, I plan on blogging more often. What kind of topics would you like to see, interview outfits, cocktail hour after work outfits, or other more getting-ready type of content?? Let me know 🙂

P.S. This is not s sponsored post. I have purchased all my outfits. The only exception was the handbag – the Coach Dinky bag was gifted to me last year.

You can also think of it as styles that make your everyday wardrobe more sporty and athletic.

Now, this obviously doesn't apply to the lawyers and business executives out there and their everyday outfits. But for the rest of us in the creative industry, sales and marketing, or smaller office where dresscode is more casual than business, you might be able to get by with it!

If you don’t know what “athleisure” means, it’s a new word that’s been created to mean the fusion of athletic wear and leisure wear. You can also think of it as styles that make your everyday wardrobe more sporty and athletic.

Now, this obviously doesn’t apply to the lawyers and business executives out there and their everyday outfits. But for the rest of us in the creative industry, sales and marketing, or smaller office where dresscode is more casual than business, you might be able to get by with it!

I love this trend with all my heart because this means I can AVOID HEELS. And today, I wanted to show you 2 ways to incorporate sneakers into office outfits!

It all comes down to two things – what kind of pants you’re wearing, and/or what accessories/top you are wearing to balance out the casualness.

1) The Pants Make or Break an Outfit Involving Sneakers

Generally speaking, you want to elongate your overall silhouette, so wear something that shows your lower leg. This means either culottes or crop trousers that are just a tidbit shorter than normal. See the two examples below:

Now you have the silhouette figured out, let’s talk about the top to wear with such a seemingly casual look.

2) Keep the color neutral & sleek cut that look more ‘business” than causal.

It’s quite simple – stick with either white or black! They always work. Lastly, pair the outfit with a simple handbag, you’re ready to head to work!

Lastly, I HAVE To brag a little bit about snatching these rose gold Nike Air Max Thea – they have been sold out EVERYWHERE and highly sought after. Honestly, my strategy was just regularly (by that I mean every day, sometimes a few times a day) check this Nordstrom page. Sometimes if you’re lucky, someone returns a pair and then all of a sudden you have available inventory… If not, these two pairs in different colors are JUST as gorgeous too!

Have you tried wearing sneakers to the office? How did it feel and would you do it again now that you know the template to make the look work?

Everyone should have a go-to outfit on days when they don’t want to stand in front of a closet, stare at it, and stress. If you have to dress for work 5 days a week, this scenario I just painted has probably happened to you. For most of us, the concept of the capsule wardrobe is not new – find what works for you, and stick with it. Whether you’ve gotten around officially defining what that look is for you,  it’s never too late to start thinking about it.

Today on Cubicle Chic, I’m sharing my “template” is, when it comes to something that ALWAYS works for me, Jessica, yours truly. But that’s not it. I have 2 other career blogger friends whose styles are just on-point and I absolutely adore. I am sharing what their go-to outfits are with you too! Keep scrolling to the bottom to see 2 more impeccably professional yet fashionable looks!

White Top + High-Waisted Pants + Leather Sneakers

Here’s the deal – the color white in an outfit always conveys professionalism and efficiency (think about what doctors and chefs wear). Plus, you and I both know it, white goes with everything.

High-waisted pants tend to elongate me and that’s why I love them. But I have to be very careful of where the hem of the pants hit – it has to be at a place that’s flattering for my body frame. And what kind of shoes I wear also makes a big difference.

Leather sneakers is a new trend I discovered lately. I’ve always secretly wished we could wear sneakers to the office, and when I saw the Nike Airmax Thea in leather, I knew it was the one. The leather material makes them look a lot less casual, and my feet always thank me at the end of the day in the office. But remember they’re still sneakers after all, so don’t wear them to an interview or a presentation.

Lastly, pair it with a simple, neutral-tone and classic handbag – you’re good to go!

Now, if this isn’t the type of look you see yourself wearing, I have two more – and I want to introduce to you Michele Lando from Write Styles, and Chanèle McFarlane from Do Well Dress Well. These are both fabulously stylish and total #GirlBosses who have amazing tips on how to dress for the office.

Structured Blazer + Flowy Blouse + Skinny Pants [or] Pencil Skirt

Michele has a simplistic and sometimes monochromatic approach when it comes to creating her go-to outfit. This look works for most body type, and as long as you find a quality blazer, and keep colors to a minimum, you are sure to look chic and professional like Michele does here!

Neutral Color Dress + Print or Floral Blazer + Statement Necklace

On the other end of the spectrum, Chanele is an absolute expert in mastering color in her outfits. Honestly, if you want to see how colorful outfits can be done professionally & tastefully, check out her blog!!

Here Chanele pairs a simple black dress with a super bright and floral blazer, and finished the look with a statement necklace. Voila – this outfit is bold and bright, but so meticulously chic and polished!

Sorry I’ve been MIA on the blog for a couple of weeks now… life was kicking my butt with work-work, family business work (which took me to Amsterdam… did you see that on Instagram?), wedding planning, and prepping for all the holiday content that’s coming up. But tis the season of our collective favorite time of the year, aren’t you excited??

Who I’m thankful For This Season

Sorry I’ve been MIA on the blog for a couple of weeks now… life was kicking my butt with work-work, family business work (which took me to Amsterdam… did you see that on Instagram?), wedding planning, and prepping for all the holiday content that’s coming up. But tis the season of our collective favorite time of the year, aren’t you excited??

I do want to take a moment to say something, especially to YOU, my reader, who’s reading this paragraph right now. I don’t think there is anything better I can ask for, than to create a connection with you purely via words. If you think about it, that’s something amazing especially in a world where reading is becoming more and more archaic. Thank you for taking the time to read my writing, to care about what I have to say… even if you’ve never left a comment or a message, I want to give you a big virtual hug and say THANK YOU!!

Now Onto My Must-wear Travel Piece!

Two business travels back to back have left me even more convinced that this poncho is EVERYTHING a girl needs on a flight, especially when traveling through airport security and needing to stay light and compact.

Boots: Public Desire Backpack: ASOS Square Leather Backback

It’s made by Miilla, which is a wholesaler and their clothing is available through Poshmark. This poncho is absolutely high quality and is made of a microsuede-like material. It’s got pockets, and a hooded hat you can wear when it’s raining. The best thing about it is that when you are trying to sleep on a flight, this is essentially a blanket!

I don’t think there is any other outerwear you can wear that will top the utility of this poncho, let alone how cute it is! To be honest I never hopped on the poncho bandwagon in the last few years because they always looked…too much like ponchos?? I just never liked any styles of poncho until I saw this one.

So what do you think? Where are you traveling to this holiday season, and what do you always wear on your travel days??

I am constantly trying to spruce up my work wardrobe. It’s one of the reasons why I started this blog, which is to share my outfit ideas with all of you and to know what other office dwelling women are wearing.

After 6 years spent in the corporate world, I have a set template developed for how to dress for the everyday office days. But occasionally, I like to add elements of surprise just to feel like I’m not wearing uniforms.

This trench coat is one of these totally surprising elements!

The lapels of the trench coat give it the structured element that you want to have in an office outfit, but the long flow-y nature of the piece elevates the style of the outfit.

I paired the outfit with some mules that are probably on the more casual side, but with any of these loafers or even heels below, this outfit would be perfectly office appropriate. They’re all under $100!

On a separate note, these photos were taken around Alfred Tea Room in downtown LA. It’s SUCH a cute place, and of course, makes really awesome photos thanks to their pink decor! It was funny because when we were there, I saw at least 5 other groups there for photo shoots. If you’re in the LA area, don’t forget to check it out!

I haven’t written about outfits in a while on Cubicle Chic. So let’s talk about one of the hottest trends lately – the pajamas for day time style.

As a trend observer and sometimes follow, I ventured out and gave this style a try earlier this year. I can’t say I have been fully convinced just yet that this style is here to stay. Let’s face it: this is definitely one of those trends that “looks so good in magazine/covershots, but looks like joke on me” kind of thing.

So imagine my surprise, when my ASOS order came in and this pink little number fit really well on me. Still quite different from how it looks on the model, but hey, I liked it.

So I thought about how I made made it work, and realized that when putting together this outfit, I thought about these things below.

Principles I adhere to when filtering new trends to try:

1) Have I seen enough of it on others to know that it’s likely to work on “normal people”?

This was quite simple to answer – I really HAVE been seeing this trend everywhere, and quite a few of them have caught my eyes. I have seen how it works, and I have seen how it doesn’t work. And when it does work, I can see myself emulating these trend setters on how to style the PJ style romper/sets.

2) Are there ways to tone down the trendiness of it?

For this particular jumpsuit I wore, I know rolling up the sleeves make any button down shirt look more casual and relaxed. So that’s what I did. I also carried a backpack in this ensemble, which is another hot trend lately but a more casual and everyday kind of trend. By adding these two elements, I made this outfit look more everyday.

3) Do I have existing pieces in my wardrobe to style this outfit with?

There’s a reason why I started Cubicle Chic  – my wardrobe is filled with work appropriate clothing and my style falls on the conservative side of things. Is there a way I can style this trend to fit my #girlboss image? I decided to pair them with my Banana Republic Jolene Mules so I look more polished and clean.

4) Do I have at least a few occasion to wear this outfit to, if it’s not an everyday kind of piece?

I had PoshFest, The Collective, and the company holiday party coming up so I knew there are occasions that I could test out this trendy outfit for. I didn’t wind up wearing it for any of these occasions because I just have too many choices in my closet, but I have a plan for it… just wait and see!
